The selkie is a traditional name in Scotland for a mermaid who can swim as a seal. This particular one is unique. It was inspired by my muse Hannah who lives in Orkney where seals abound. She lives and works in a seal sanctuary where the original hangs. It was auctioned for fundraising but the buyer then donated the painting back to be placed in the sanctuary permanently.
Hannah had long hair as in the painting and the pose came from putting together views of her with seals. In the background on the headland is her mother playing her violin. She did this in real life and the seals gather to listen to the beautiful sound.
